Rhythmograms, photographs, dimensions variable, 1955-1960; video documentary on Rhythmograph by Ali Altschaffel

Addition to printed rhythmograph, there is a documentary by Ali Altschaffel showing the reconstructed machine made of steel tubes. Joints and weights moving a point of light with the help of mechanical pendula, a mirror and a camera to record it for several minutes. By rhythmically switching the light on and off, layered figures are generated as well as by superimposing the same or different pattern on top of each other.

Heinrich Heidesberger while studying painting at Fernand Leger’s École Moderne in Paris (1928-1931) he bought his first camera at the flea market and in the coming years devoted himself more and more to photography. He worked as a photographer, painter and media artist. His photographic work ranges from architectural and industrial to abstract and documentary photography.
