Focal Slowing, computer animation, HDV, 4x3, 6.18 min., 2013.

Focal Slowing confronts the observers with the threshold perceptual experiences occurring while the image is formed in our mind. It invites the observers to experiment with spatial resolution - one of our main windows of visibility, to discover the cracks within our visual reality and recognize themselves as a carriers of mental images; in order to loosen the borders between sense perception and imagination, between visual reality and the realm of mental images.

Ivana Franke in her installations, often uses ambiguous visual phenomena and arresting spatial structures, which she delicately orchestrates to expose disjunctions and offer unexpected connections within the spatiotemporal matrix we inhabit. These works are profound challenge to our habitual perception and understanding of the environment. Drawing from a wide range of disciplines like neuroscience, mathematics, optics and architecture Franke redirect photons and confuse the gaze.
