"ECHO"

Communication in the streets is not the same as communication in a room. In a street too much information can really become noise**. In a smaller space it is possible to communicate directly with only one person at a time and to pay attention to subtle nuances in speech that would otherwise, perhaps, go unnoticed.
The way one perceives an outdoor urban space is mainly determined by architecture. It decides on possible ways of moving and the direction of views. The sounds remains in the background and can, for quite a while, stay unnoticed but as soon as one becomes aware of them they turn into an intelligible but vital image of continuous speech. The words, and thus their meaning, might not be understandable, but the fact that they are there, carries a meaning in itself and one’s inability to take part in the overall communicating stresses the outsider position of the individual.
